Why is the role of solvents essential?
Solvents are the functional foundation of every perfume formulation. They dissolve fragrance compounds, stabilize sensitive molecules, and ensure that a perfume unfolds harmoniously—from the sparkling top note to the warm base. Ethanol, in particular, has established itself as the universal carrier: it dissolves most aroma compounds, evaporates in a controlled manner, and efficiently transports the scent into the surrounding air.
What makes solvents indispensable in perfumes?

Water alone is not enough: Many fragrance compounds are not water-soluble and would not distribute evenly—nor could they fully develop their olfactory effect. The rapid evaporation and high dissolving power of alcohol are crucial for modern perfumes.
Solvents also play a key role in fragrance extraction: Whether using traditional methods like enfleurage or modern extraction techniques, solvents are essential for efficiently transferring characteristic fragrance molecules from the plant into the raw material.
